Older Workers: When Retirement Reality Doesn't Match the Dreams

Older workers, the idea of retirement marks a significant shift in our lives. The Retirement  Coaches Association , an international network of experts, conducted a 2023 survey to gain a better understanding of retirement reality. The final report revealed, to me, these key insights which you or someone you know might relate to.

Pre-Retirement Expectations vs. Reality

Older workers, we often imagine retirement as a time of endless relaxation—traveling, doing old or taking up new hobbies, and just enjoying our new free time. But, the reality is often different. Many retirees feel a sense of disconnection or boredom, unsure of how to fill their days. The loss of a structured routine can make the adjustment more challenging and the days longer, than anticipated.

Retirement Can be Different Than we Expect

Purpose and Connection Are Essential

Retirement is a complete lifestyle change. Many of us ask questions like, "Who am I without my career?" "How do I stay motivated" and "How do I spend my time?" Finding purpose, identity, and belonging in this new stage is crucial. Whether it’s through part-time work, volunteering, solopreneurship or finding new interests, staying connected helps keep this stage of life vibrant and meaningful.

Retirement Is a Journey, Not a Final Destination

Older workers, many of us expect to have our retirement life figured out immediately, but it’s often a gradual process—sometimes taking years. I admit, after 14 years out of structured work, I’m still learning to adjust. It’s perfectly normal to need time to adapt, discover new routines, and settle into what brings you comfort, joy and purpose.

Exploring Flexible Work and New Opportunities

Older workers, if you're nearing retirement or already there remember: it's okay to take your time. One of the most rewarding aspects of retirement is the opportunity to plan what you'll do, on your own terms.

Many of us today choose to stay in the workforce, for a variety of reasons— to keep active, share our expertise, or just to be part of a community.
