The Workplace Is Changing and Experienced Workers Matter More Than Ever

Have you ever looked at a job posting and thought, “Do they only want younger workers”? You’re not alone. Many experienced adults feel uncomfortable about returning to work, changing careers, or keeping up in a workplace that has changed dramatically. New technology is regularly introduced, hiring feels - and is - different and difficult, and ageism can slowly hurt confidence.

Experienced Workers Aren't Leaving

At the same time, retirement itself is changing. More adults are choosing to continue working, start second careers, consult, or return to work after retirement, a growing trend often called “unretirement.” For many, work is no longer just about income. It’s also about purpose, connection, contribution, flexibility, and staying engaged in meaningful ways.

Why Experienced Workers Bring Unique Value to Employers

The reality is that experienced workers are more valuable than ever. Around the world employers are struggling to fill positions and retain good employees. Meanwhile, older workers offer the qualities many organizations need, including reliability, communication skills, leadership, problem-solving ability, and real-life experience that has overcome challenges and mastered change. Research consistently shows that age-diverse teams perform better, make stronger decisions, and retain employees longer.

The Challenges Experienced Workers Face in Today’s Job Market

Too many older adults underestimate their own value because of outdated stereotypes and assumptions around age and technology. Yet research shows older workers are highly willing to learn new tools and adapt to changing workplaces.

Older adults are ready to bring their experience, adaptability, and insight into workplaces in new and diverse ways.
