Older workers, remember this blog from September 15? I have an update to share!
On October 3rd, I attended a “Meet Your Electoral Candidate” event at the False Creek Community Center. The audience was made up of around 100 people—about 95% of whom were seniors. Two candidates showed up to engage with us:
Adam Hawk, representing the Green Party
Brenda Bailey, NDP candidate
Your Vote is Essential
Unfortunately, there was no representation from the Conservative Party.
During the event, the candidates were asked two key questions, from my previous blog:
What will you do to create more job opportunities for older adults in BC?
How would you support ongoing training and professional development for older workers?
Here’s how the candidates responded.
Adam Hawk (Green Party) After some hesitation, Mr. Hawk admitted, “That’s not really in my wheelhouse. There’s retraining planned, but not for seniors.” He then added, “Seniors should be retired; they shouldn’t have to work.”
Brenda Bailey (NDP) Ms. Bailey pointed out that the NDP introduced a Future Skills Program, which offers micro-credentials. "We've invested heavily in this program for post-secondary students," she explained.
These responses were disheartening and not well thought out, given this reality.
Older workers, as the election approaches, it’s more important than ever to think about where your vote will land. The decisions made by the next government will have a direct impact on your future, especially when it comes to employment and training opportunities. It’s not just about what’s happening now—it’s about creating a workforce that values your experience and skills, where age is seen as an asset rather than a limitation.
Your vote is a way to make sure policies are in place that support age-friendly workplaces, where flexibility, mentorship, and lifelong learning are all priorities. Whether you're looking to keep building your career, explore new opportunities, or transition into something different, the right policies can protect your rights and give you access to meaningful, fulfilling work.
Older workers, take a minute to think about which party is truly advocating for the programs and protections that matter to you. This election is a great opportunity to push for conversations about age in the workplace and to remind everyone that older workers bring immense value. The choice you make now could shape how older workers are supported and appreciated in the years to come.
