Identity in Retirement: Letting Go of Job Titles and Finding Yourself Again

When I walked out of work for the last time, it wasn’t the work I missed; it was the answer to the simple question people asked when they met me: “So, what do you do?” Overnight, my answer disappeared, along with my confidence. I didn’t just leave a job; I lost my perceived identity. That can feel uncomfortable, even frightening, at first.
For decades, your job title gave you structure, routine, purpose, and pride. When that disappears, it can feel like you've disappeared. But the truth is: your job was something you did; not who you are. You bring a lifetime of strengths to different roles, including organizer, listener, leader, problem-solver; those strengths endure long after the paycheque stops.
New Adventures, New Meaning for Identity in Retirement
Some of you may still be thinking of retirement as "the action or fact of leaving one's job and ceasing to work", as Oxford dictionaries defines it. But retirement isn’t about leaving your past; it’s about discovering what comes next and how to use all of your strengths.
Retirement isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. Experts now describe this era of life as a “new old age,” where work, learning, and leisure can flow together in rich and flexible ways, not bound by traditional retirement models.
Some retirees find joy in learning; not for credentials, but out of curiosity and for connection. Others discover purpose by mentoring, volunteering, taking up art, starting passion projects, or having more space for family and friendships. Purpose doesn’t disappear — it changes shape.

Reframing Identity in Retirement
Start practising how you introduce yourself now , so you’re ready with something more meaningful than a job title. Prepare by asking yourself: What excites me about this chapter of life? What feels scary, and why? Which strengths and interests have I ignored, and want to bring back? What have I never had time to try before? What are my interests and hobbies?
